An autumn leaf, twice on different types of paper

Instagram

My Enchanted Forest copy has very smooth paper. I was wondering what the exact difference would be if I would duplicate a leaf on a different type of paper.
I made two videos about colouring an autumn leaf in my Enchanted Forest copy and on sketching paper.

Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils are available in the Passion for Pencils Webshops.

Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils are available in the Passion for Pencils Webshops. Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils are available in the Passion for Pencils Webshops.
I started with colouring in Enchanted Forest. I used 11 different colours, all Faber Castell Polychromos:

185 Napels Yellow
168 Earth Green Yellowish
115 Dark Cadmium Orange
174 Chromium Green Opaque
217 Middle Cadmium Red
121 Pale Geranium Lake
109 Dark Chrome Yellow
177 Walnut Brown
246 Prussian Blue
111 Cadmium Orange
225 Dark Red

In the videos I use the pencils in the same order as listed here.
In both cases, both on the smooth paper and the sketching paper, I start off with giving the leaf a first layer of yellow. I do not try to cover all the paper because I want the leaf to look real. So I try to vary the colour a little. Some areas will be more yellow, or green or red than other areas.
As I continue colouring I keep in mind to ‘forget’ colouring certain areas.

The first five or six layers are just about giving the leaf its basic colours. But then, when adding the next few layers, the MAGIC happens. This is why I love layering so much! Suddenly, the leaf comes to life! The colours start to come together and the drawing will get the vibrance and texture I am looking for.

Daily Tutorial - Day 16 - Adding detail

DAY 16

In this episode of the Daily Tutorial I will add a little bit more colour to the background and the flowers.
The drawing is almost finished, sometimes I find it hard to determine whether it is finished or not. If I am not sure I put the drawing aside for a while. Most of the time I know what to do the next time I see the drawing.

Download the Daily Tutorial Drawing!

Today, there will be no video of the Daily Tutorial.
I am preparing a video in which I will finish the drawing. But I need a little more time to make it happen.

Instead of the tutorial, I have the drawing in PDF for you!
The size is a bit odd, though, the PDF only covers the actual drawing, not the surrounded space that is left on the sheet of paper. The entire sheet of paper, shown in the picute below, it A4 size.
So when you print it,it is best to choose A5 paper size, or something close to that. Then you will get about the same size of picture that I use for this tutorial.

Here is an example of what the scale should be:

This is a picture of the actual sheet of paper with the ink drawing. The sheet is A4 size.

You can download the pdf via this link:

My technical skills need some upgrading when it comes to PDF's...sorry for that! I hope you can figure it out!

Daily Tutorial - Day 15 - Finishing the leaves

DAY 15

Almost there! In this video I think I finished the leaves...I only know for sure once I finished the background.
In this video I added some more colours on the leaves and fixed the one leaf I wasn't happy about.

Daily Tutorial - Day 14 - Adding a white Caran d'Ache pencil

Instagram

DAY 14

The famous white Caran d'Ache Luminance has made its entrance!
While building the background I realized I needed a white pencil. I never use white pencils, this is the first time!
A couple of months ago I bought the Luminance pencil but hadn't had the opportunity to use it. Untill now!
I cannot tell you anything about the Luminance pencils because I only have one, this white one.
I only know they are considered the best and the most expensive pencils on earth!

Book Drawing Landscapes, Flowers and Trees

The book "Drawing Landscapes" by William F. Powell I showed you in the video is a combination of three separate books: Drawing Landscapes, Drawing Flowers and Drawing Trees.
All three book are available separately on Amazon and Bol.com.

At Bol.com a combined book of all three books is available in Dutch:

Drawing Landscapes:

Drawing FLowers

Drawing trees:

The Watercolour Flower Artist's Bible

My Dutch version of The Watercolour Flower Artist's Bible by Claire Wait Brown is also available in English. It has a different cover but the inside is the same.

You can buy it on Amazon and Bol.com:

Books for drawing and painting

I have a lot of books about drawing and painting. And I have a lot of books about nature as well.
In this video I show you the three books I use a lot at the moment.
All three books are also available in english or a similar book is available.

The Nature Guide I showed in the video is one with plants and animals from Western Europe.
You may prefer a nature guide with plants and animals from where you live.

A nature guide for the USA is available on the second page in the book section of the WEBSHOP USA.

There are also great guides in German and French. I have some German books about nature. They are great books!

In the UK there are many nature guides, for examples this series of Collins Complete Guides:

The second book I show you in the video is also available in English. Go to the article about The Watercolour Flower Artist's Bible for more information about buying the book.

The third book is also available in English, but as three separate books. There is also a combined version of the three books available in Dutch. Click HERE for more information about buying the books.

Daily Tutorial - Day 12 - Grays and Flowers

DAY 12

Today I found the courage to add some colour to the flowers. I tend to make a mess of flowers so I am very careful when I am colouring them.

Daily Tutorial - Day 5 - Adding blue to the background

Download the FREE PDF and colour with me!

Building background the way I do it is a long process. In this video I add blue to the background.
Other colours will be added to connect the background with the forefront.
I hope in the end result the background will look 'blurry', smooth and will make the leaves, branches and flowers look like they jump off the paper!

Daily Tutorial - Day 10 - The background is taking shape

This is day 10 of the Daily Tutorial.
I am still using my Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils.
If you want to you can mix your pencil brands. Most good quality pencils go very well together.
If I weren't making these Daily Tutorials, I would leave the drawing alone for a couple of days so I can get a fresh look on the drawing.
But that would mean that there would be days that I do not post a tutorial. So I will keep going!

Daily Tutorial - Day 9 - Shading makes the sun shine

Adding shaded areas to your drawings will turn your drawings into master pieces.
Shading is one of my favourite things in colouring. But I take a slow pace because too much shading can ruin everything.
So with a light hand and delicate layers of greys, blues, browns and eventually even a little bit of black, I will try to let the sun shine in my drawings!

Daily Tutorial - Day 8 - New shades of blue

Blue is one of my favourite colours. I chose it to be the main colour in the background of this drawing because it will help the eyes to focus on the leaves, flowers and branches.
Blue is a cool colour which helps warmer colours to appear closer to the viewer.
I want this drawing to look like you can touch the leaves, flowers and branches. Playing with cooler and warmer tones and light and dark will help to achieve that goal.

Daily Tutorial - Day 7 - Fixing ink lines and leaves

I find ink drawings a lot easier to colour than drawings sketched with a graphite pencil.
The clear lines of an ink drawing will not fade during the colouring process.
I often 'loose' my graphite sketched lines and that makes it harder for me to stay on track.
Although I like those ink lines, in the end I do not want them to be prominent in the drawing.
With darker colours I can make the ink lines less visible.

Daily Tutorial - Day 6 - Toning down and adding warmth

Many of my drawings have a 'muted' look. It is not something I do on purpose, it seems like it is my style of colouring. I like layering and blending and 'toning down' the brigthest colours.
Toning down can be tricky, because when done with the wrong colours, your drawing turns into a mess.

Drawing Techniques PART 1: Cross Hatching TUTORIAL

A garland in pastels - Layering and shading - with voice over!

Daily Tutorial - Day 1 - layering and shading

DAY 1

I don't know how it came about but on Februari 1 I found myself recording Day 1 of a Daily Tutorial!
This first episode is about laying down the first layers of colour.
I am using my Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils but you can use any brand you want!
Enjoy!

Daily Tutorial-Day 2 - Flowers, leaves and branches

DAY 2

Today I will add some more colour to the flowers, leaves and branches.
I am terrified to ruin the flowers, I've done that before with flowers, so I take my time with them and will concentrate more on the leaves and branches.
