Testing Faber Castell Polychromos

My beloved Bruynzeel Design Pencils are wearing down fast these days.
I'm colouring almost every day and my Bruynzeel set may not last for very long.
So I've decided to buy 5 Faber Castell Polychromos pencils to see if these pencils should be my next set of pencils.

My Bruynzeel pencil set has 100 colours. Although I love the look of all those 100 colours in the wooden box, I don't use all these colours. I use about 70 of them.
Because Faber Castell Polychromos pencils are quite expensive I've decided to go for the set of 60 pencils.
The 5 pencils I bought are not in the set of 60 pencils, so I will have 5 extra colours if I may decide to buy these set of pencils.

When I bought my Bruynzeel Design pencils almost 17 years ago, I took my time to see if these pencils would fit me. Now that I'm about to buy a new set, I'm looking for a pencil that colours in the same way, or at least comes close to the Bruynzeel pencils.

I went to an art store in Rotterdam and tried every pencil they had: Caran d'Ache Pablo and Luminance, Derwent Artist and Coloursoft, and Faber Castell Polychromos.
These pencils are all great but I liked the Polychromos more than the other ones.
So I bought these 5 pencils:

Cobalt Blue
Light Chrome Yellow
Permanent Green
Permanent Green Olive
Deep Scarlet Red

Here are two videos about what you can do with only these 5 colours:

When I started colouring with these pencils it became immediately clear that there is a better quality pigment in these pencils than in my Bruynzeel Design set. These Polychromos colours are so vibrant!

If you want to buy Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils you can purchase them via the Passion for Pencils Webshop USA, Webshop The Netherlands , or via one of the links below.

In the next video, I'm trying to fix this fox, because I initially started colouring this page with watercolour paint. And that did not work out...but the Polychromos pencils are doing a great job!

The last couple of weeks I have coloured a lot with these five pencils. I had to find my way with them but I've decided these are the pencils I will buy. I love the vibrant colours, the smooth way of colouring, the amount of layers you can put on top of each other and the fact that the leads will not break that easily. I also like the fact that these pencils are cylindrical and not hexagonal. Don't ask me why but for some reason hexagonal pencils do not work for me like the cylindrical ones do.

There is another thing I like about Faber Castell in general. This company is working hard to produce there pencils and pens in an eco-friendly way. If you want to learn more about this you can visit the Faber Castell Website.

  1. I have just purchased the Marco Renoir fine art 72 pencils set and the pencils are the same as my 48 pencil Bruynzeel pencils with 24 more colors. The color numbers match up on the 48 colors and they look the same on paper and feel the same when coloring. They cost around $50.00 on Amazon. You should check them out.

    1. This is interesting! I already have more than 400 pencils so I really do not need more...but maybe, if the manufacturer sends me a set to review...;)

  2. I bought the Lyra Polycolors as a stop gap, $75 for 72 pencils. Good review on YouTube, which I'll back up now. But it also put me $75 further from the Polychromos, which cost $270 here in Canada.
In the meantime, based on your most excellent videos, I have bought open stock of Payne's Grey, Permanent Olive Green, Opague Chromium Green (nearest I could figure to the Permanent Green you recommend). I did buy the PC Cream, and was disappointed in it.
Neat thing too is that the Lyra's use the same colour number as the PC's. So when I made my colour chart, if I had Lyra, I put that in a 120 chart with the number. Now I have a clear idea if there is a gap.
But I have to tell you, the next $Dollars will go the Colour Along Project!!!

  3. I'm so glad other adult colouring enthusiast are also using FC polychromos. That and Derwant is the only colour pencils that is available in art shops in my side of the world. I love to use them. It is just a pity that most videos are on prismacolours. I wish we had that too, using FC.
